Skye Chorus
Who We Are
Skye Chorus is a community choir with around 75 singers from all over the Isle of Skye and the adjacent mainland.
Originally, the South Skye Chorus was started by Gwen MacQuarrie and Jasmine Threlfall in 2018 who persuaded Tony Cleverton to become the Musical Director. This choir rehearsed alongside Island Chorus, led by Elaine Ferguson, from the north end of Skye.
After several years of singing a whole variety of music - listed under Past Events - the choirs embarked on one major piece, Mozart’s Requiem, which was performed at Easter 2024. Of this, Skye-based John Purser, author of ‘Scotland’s Music’ s wrote in the West Highland Free Prress “An overwheming sense of joy in participation.”
The Chorus was renamed as Skye Chorus and expanded to cover the whole of Skye and adjacent mainland under Tony’s leadership, which allowed Elaine to sing rather than conduct.
Encouraged by the concerts, the choir set to in the Autumn of 2024 to rehearse Handel’s Messiah, with two sell-out concerts - on Friday 18th April 2025 in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and on Saturday 19th April in the Shepherd’s Way Church, Portree.
75 singers from all parts of Skye and Lochalsh, and Lochcarron, 4 string players, keyboard, percussion and two trumpets accompanied the four professional soloists.
